Proposed Journal Cancellations for January 2021
The RLB Library is considering the cancellation of certain journal subscriptions to control costs and to efficiently allocate library resource dollars. This webpage is to inform library users and to collect feedback on these proposed cancellations.
For FY2020, the library spent approximately $112,807 ($113,000 was budgeted) for journal subscriptions (not including those found in aggregator* databases) which it purchases to support faculty, staff and student research. For FY2021 the library has a flat budget of $113,000 for these subscriptions. Generally, publishers increase subscription prices by 6% annually. In order to make up the difference the library must reduce its expenditures in this area.
We will make every attempt to minimize the impact of subscription cancellations. Some access may be provided through an aggregator database or through our InterLibrary Loan service.
Subscriptions being considered for cancellation include:
- Those subscriptions identified as having a high cost per use (CPU) measure, specifically a cost of more than $30 per use (with “use” defined as viewing or downloading the full text of a search result).
- All print subscriptions, except UBalt publications.
- All subscriptions with fewer than 10 uses per year.
Below is a list of the journal subscriptions along with usage and cost per use data. Library users can provide comments on each subscription title using the "Send a comment" button until COB Thursday, November 5, 2020 . The library will review the comments as they are submitted and make final decisions by Friday, November 13, 2020. Cancellations will take effect on January 1, 2021.

*an aggregator database is a collection of indexed journals and other e-resources to which the library subscribes.
