Why sign up for a reference consultation?
Our librarians can work with any UBalt student, staff, faculty or alumni to find and use information effectively at any point in the research process.
Getting started: finding and refining a topic
Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Our reference librarians have brainstorming and topic refining activities that can help narrow the scope of a topic into a manageable idea. We can work with you to locate sources of information that provide overviews of a topic and can help identify key questions that are of an appropriate scope for your assignment.
In the middle: finding more resources
Maybe you have found some sources, but need a few more. Or perhaps there is one aspect of your topic upon which you need more information. Our reference librarians can work with you to develop alternative search strategies for finding information the information you seek.
At the end: verifying and citing source
Sometimes you find a resource that looks good, but doesn’t fit into any of the citation templates in the style manual. Librarians can assist with locating resources that can help figure out how to cite unusual sources, as well as ascertain whether they are reliable. If you need help more generally with citations, you can find many guides and tutorials online, as well as make an appointment with one of our writing consultants.
Throughout: Citation management
Our librarians can help get you started using Zotero or APA Style Central to keep track of your sources as you find them. Zotero has tools to generate a bibliography and integrate with Microsoft Word. APA Style Central offers citation and bibliographic generation as well as cloud-based writing platform with integrated APA paper formatting.
